Despite unfavourable weather and labour difficulties during the pandemic, certified organic fruit and vegetable producers cultivated and sold more harvest in 2020. Nonetheless, certified organic fruit and vegetable output represented 6.4 percent of total fruit and vegetable sales in 2020.
In 2020, the certified organic fruit and vegetable farmed area expanded by 8.2% to 19 506 hectares. However, poor weather conditions for some fruit producers contributed to a 4.3 percent drop in the farm-gate value of certified organic fruits and vegetables, which fell to $161.5 million. As a result of the pandemic, organic growers in Canada also experienced labour shortages and marketing issues in 2020.
