Welcome Letter to Minister Rob Flack

Dear Minister Flack,

On behalf of Ontario’s organic businesses, we would like to congratulate you on your new post as Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness. We recognize the good work your party has done for Ontario’s organic sector, most recently through funding for a public trust campaign concerning the Canadian Organic Standards and organic certification.

Ontario’s organic sector includes 1400+ farms and food businesses, which create 20,000+ jobs and provide exceptional economic growth for the province. Our consumers believe in organics: 40% of Canada’s organic grocery sales are in Ontario, with 71% of Ontario shoppers purchasing organic products weekly. However, local organic supply does not meet domestic demand; Ontario imports the most organic products of any province in Canada.

As we navigate economic, environmental, and supply chain challenges, Ontario’s organic industry can be a vital tool to future-proof Ontario’s agrifood sector. We believe a strong strategy can provide economic opportunity to Ontario farmers, attract international investment (such as Andriani Pasta’s recent move into Ontario), create new jobs, support the resilience of Ontario’s farms to climate and supply chain disruptions, and replace imports to provide Ontario food to Ontario communities – and to the world.

In your previous role as Associate Minister of Housing, as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, you met with representatives of the Organic Council of Ontario (OCO) and discussed the issue of organic regulation in Ontario. We hope in your new role as Minister of Farming, Agriculture, and Agribusiness, you will continue to support the organic sector and the important work of OCO. We look forward to working together to further strengthen Ontario’s organic sector and would welcome the opportunity to discuss our priorities with you at your earliest convenience.
